Thrift Store Frame Remake

I have a really cool idea for an empty wall in my sewing room. I'm collecting thrift store frames and shelves and repainting them ivory and then sanding the edges a little. I almost have it all ready, just have to get 'Mr. Wild' to help me hang all of this stuff.

When I spotted this frame a few weeks ago I immediately could see some of my vintage carved mop buttons inside (and buckle). I removed the glass and painted the frame a nice soft ivory. Wrapped a piece of Osnaburg around the cardboard and put the back on the frame. Then I attached the buttons.

In a Blizzard....again

Just when we finally lost some of the snow cover, here comes another snow storm.

They say a foot or more. It's been snowing since 10 this morning.

A good day to stay home and get a lot of unfinished projects completed.

This was something I've seen on blogs and wanted to try and since I'm stuck inside all day this gives me a chance to see how it works.

Crochet Flowers and Rick Rack Roses

A few little projects I've been playing with.

I've found that I enjoy crocheting flowers and I'm making a batch of them using vintage crochet thread. I could sit for hours and crochet these...

I have an idea and I need a lot of these. I'm using different shades of ecru thread...

I'll just keep crocheting until I think I have enough and then I'll show what I'm going to do with all of these flowers...if it turns out!

My good friend Stephanie introduced me to rick rack roses...

After Christmas I removed the mercury glass balls from this little mini cloche and while looking for something to put inside I spotted the roses. They look kind of good here...for now...


Stephanie gave me the instructions and beautiful cotton rick rack in pinks and soft yellows but I decided to practice with some old polyester rick rack first. They turned out okay but I've moved on to the cotton which is so much easier to work with and they look even better. I'll show them in another post...


Thanks Stephanie, for getting me started on these! I love them!!!! So many fun things to make I'm afraid I need about 5 lifetimes to do everything I plan to do!

The crochet roses are just Irish crochet. Almost any vintage crochet book, and some new books, will have patterns in  them for this style flower. I used a few different sources and came up with my own variation for this design.

Vintage Valentine Cards

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

They all have a sentiment on the back and are in beautiful condition.

Summer Flowers

I guess it's better late than never. I didn't have anything ready for Pink Saturday but then I started to unload the camera and found all of these pretty pictures from summer, birds, flowers, turkeys and deer. It's so nice to see flowers again and green grass and trees. Living in Minnesota a person gets so tired of looking out the window only to see gray and white and it's getting depressing.

Here are a few flowers from my garden last summer....

This is milkweed....a close up and it's quite pretty!

I couldn't leave out the pansies...one of my favorites.

Valentine Hearts

A few hearts I made with found vintage laces, mother of pearl buttons and old faux pearls.

I used my own hand dyed wool, added the embellishments and blanket stitched around the edges after adding a little stuffing.

Hanging from the mantle...

Very quick and easy to make...

They were published in the recent Create & Decorate magazine, which I am kind of proud of....

Handmade Eyelet Lace

This handmade eyelet lace is amazing. To think someone long ago, perhaps a young girl, marked this strip of cotton fabric with a lead pencil, punched holes through the fabric with this tool which appears to bone. She then took teeny tiny stitches all around each opening to form eyelet lace is hard to imagine.

The strip measures 46" and she only had a quarter of it left to do...

I wonder what happened...

Why did she stop...

I can crochet with some pretty fine thread but this is way beyond my patience!

The strip is only 1-1/2" across and the design is about 3/4" at its widest.

The bone tool was with the lace when I found it.
